They didn’t just look at books they exclaimed over them. They played with toys and put them back, mostly in the right areas. They were chatty, inquisitive and clearly loved the store. All of them under five, all with their moms and all just cute as buttons. The computers utterly locked up, the phone was ringing off the hook, and there was so much to be done that my getting in at 8:30 made an imperceptible dent in the to-do list. Yesterday was the kind of day that could have gone over to the dark side. It allows you to bid from the comfort of your home, in your jammies if you’re so inclined, secure in the knowledge that you’re about to make someone’s holiday truly special. Though I’m an avid fan of the ABFFE-sponsored auction at Book Expo, this online auction is all the more fun without having to camp out next to the one piece you’re willing to fight for.
